CAS students rule regional journalism tilt

College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) students were among those who ruled in the Regional Higher Education Press Conference (RHEPC) as they bagged medals in different categories in the said journalism tilt last Jan. 11-13.

Five Bachelor of Arts in Communication students namely Mena-Seh Maloles, Anne Krisna Pabellano, Mark Sherwin Reyes, Resa Mae Salvador, and Joshua James Vicente, and one Bachelor of Science in Mathematics student, Mark Gabriel Marquez, brought honor to the college as they were hailed winners in the contests they participated in. All are members of the The Kingfisher, the official student publication of SLSU, and had represented the university in the said press conference.

In the writing contests for regular category, Maloles and Reyes both bagged two medals: the former won 2nd place in News Writing Filipino and 4th place in Copy reading and Headline Writing English, while the latter won 3rd place in Sports Writing Filipino, and Copy reading and Headline Writing Filipino.

Pabellano bagged 6th place in Poetry Writing English while Marquez won 3rd place in Comic Strip Drawing English and 5th place in Literary Graphics English, bringing home two medals. Moreover, Vicente bagged two medals after landing 1st place in Photojournalism English, and Layouting. He was also awarded 1st place Individual Highest Pointer after earning 20 points, allowing him to get his third medal.

Salvador also won 1st place in Photojournalism English for the special contest for observers. Another student of CAS and member of the CAS student publication, Angelica Calampiano, won 1st place in News Writing English for the special contest for observers.

In the overall ranking, The Kingfisher was hailed 1st place top performing university in the press conference after a decade of pursuit to regain the title. All the winners in the regular category will represent the University and CALABARZON in the Luzonwide Higher Education Press Conference in Puerto Princesa, Palawan in February.

Attended by more than 600 participants from more than 40 Colleges and Universities in CALABARZON, RHEPC is an annual tilt for student journalists in Region IV-A, organized by the Association of Tertiary Press Advisers of Southern Tagalog (ATPAST). // Mena-Seh Maloles
