Faculty members of the Bachelor of Arts in Communication participated in the online training on podcast channel development from July 24 to September 11, 2020.

Dr. Shiela M. Manzanilla, Asst. Prof. Brian D. Villaverde and Ms. Khristalyn V. Fraginal attended the workshop every Friday. The training covered podcast pre-production and production and podcast channel development that aims to educate people of the wildlife and biodiversity situation in various parts of the Philippines.

In the first two weeks, participants wrote their scripts for stand-alone podcast episodes. The group worked on the topic of mangrove forests in Quezon Province. Resource speakers Peter De Witt and Shayne Banks of the US Bureau of Land Management, as well as facilitator/moderator Anne Claudine Dayo of Tanggol Kalikasan guided and commented on them in preparing the podcast episode scripts. Different themes were created across the podcast episodes such as habitat, and animal and marine species.

In the following weeks, after Bianca Joy Tallafer presented a lecture on how to record and edit the materials for a podcast and ethical considerations in producing a podcast, the groups were tasked to record, and edit their podcast episodes. The speakers and facilitators critiqued the works for revision and improvement. Final podcast episodes were presented on August 28. In this session, this year’s batch was joined by the participants from the April 2019 first batch. Ms. Mary Jane S. Camarador and Prof. Lourdes Quevada, SLSU IEG Coordinator, were also present in the next sessions.

After the production of podcast episodes, participants attended the session on branding, marketing, and getting listeners by Banks and De Witt and Setting up the podcast channel by Ronster Baetiong, the CEO and Founder of Podcast Network Asia.

The participants also took part in planning for the podcast channel development workshop in the last session on September 11 to be streamed at Wildlife Philippines Podcast. Southern Luzon State University’s podcast episodes are scheduled on October 16 and 23, 2020.

This podcast channel development training was organized by Tanggol Kalikasan, in partnership with United States Agency International Development (USAID) and the US Department of the Interior – International Technical Assistance Program. Twenty-four State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) from the Philippines attended the training.
