BS Biology students Krizz Audrie Trinidad and Jeric Presas brought home the 3rd Best Student Paper Award at the International Meliponine Conference and Asian Apiculture Association-Philippines Symposium held at the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) at Los Baños, Laguna, February 25-28, 2020.

Biology student Krizz Audrie Trinidad presents their paper (on the left panel) and received their award (on the right panel).

Trinidad and Presas won the award for the paper they presented in the conference entitled “Pollination of the Passion Fruit Passiflora edulis Sims.f. flavicarpa Degener in Lucban, Quezon Philippines.” In this study, they investigated the foraging behavior of carpenter bees and their impact on fruit set and quality of yellow passion fruit. They were able to show that the low percentage of fruit set in open pollinated flowers might be an indication of low pollinator-plant ratio in the farm. They were supervised by their research adviser, Prof. Wilfredo Barrera, Jr.
