BA Comm researchers receive Special Jury Mention Award in PJRC 2018 Special Project Category

“For courageously portraying the conditions of members of a marginalized group and presenting them in a most visually compelling and emotionally moving manner… we give a special jury mention to Kwentong Bahaghari of Southern Luzon State University.”Students of Bachelor of Arts in Communication bagged the Special Jury Mention Award in the Philippine Journalism Research Conference (PJRC) 2018 for their documentary film entitled “Kwentong Bahaghari,” held at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, May 3.

Joleen Araneta, Kim Belard Marquez and Jethron Cyrus Lavadia highlighted the success stories of the members of Bahaghari Organization in their documentary film. Bahaghari is a progressive organization of LGBTQ that seeks to uphold LGBTQ rights, advance the sectorial interests, and work for the realization of democratic aspirations.

Ariel Sebellino of the Philippine Press Institute, Carlo Figueroa of De La Salle University and of the Canadian Embassy, and Deo Bagaoisan of GMA 7 served as judges for the special project categories. They commended the researchers for featuring members of an LGBTQ organization in an emotionally moving documentary.

Meanwhile, Baby Clarisse Ramirez, another BA Comm student, presented her research entitled “Drugs, Death and Glory: An Analysis of the News Reports on Duterte and his War on Drugs.” Her study qualified in the Academic (News Analysis) category.

PJRC 2018 was held during the celebration of Press Freedom Day with the theme “Democracy and Disinformation: The Continuing Fight.” It was organized by the University of the Philippines Journalism Department, in partnership with the University of Santo Tomas.

Ms. Mary Jane Camarador served as the adviser of Marquez, Araneta and Lavadia while Dr. Shiela M. Manzanilla was the adviser of Ramirez. // CAS Web Development Team
