Students of Bachelor of Arts in Communication brought honor to Southern Luzon State University once again as the documentary film ‘In Memoriam’ was awarded Best Documentary Film in the Piling Obrang Vidyo (POV) XIII, an interschool video competition organized by the University of the Philippines.

Directors Jeremy Vien Quing and Katrina Oblefias received plaque and certificate during the screening and awarding ceremony held at CineAdarna Film Center, University of the Philippines-Diliman, Jan. 21, 2017.

Oblefias said that it was a heart-warming experience when the host asked the audience which is the best documentary film, to which they answered ‘In Memoriam’ in unison.

Meanwhile, Quing said that it was a proud moment to see some of the audience shed tears as their documentary film was being played on the big screen.

‘In Memoriam’ is a documentary film that features the lives of the elderlies living in homes for the aged. It tackles how globalization changed the Filipino values that led to the placement of the elderlies in such facilities. A link to the trailer of the documentary can be found here.

Completed just last semester, the documentary film is a product of their undergraduate thesis under the supervision of Ms. Princess Catherine L. Pabellano. Another member of the group, Janjan Merjudio, contributed to the completion of the project.

The competition is judged by no less than some of the respected documentary film makers in the country.

The Best Documentary Film award marked another excellent output for the BA Communication program. In the last few years, students of the program became finalists not only in POV but also in Region IV-A PeliKultura, the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), and Cinemalaya Film festival. Students of the program have also notably excelled in national and international research conferences, as they have consistently bagged awards and recognitions in various research competitions. - CAS Web Development Team
